The year in review – 2018
The IIG has had another incredible year, with our four key strategic pillars being the focal point, namely Education & Personal Growth, Professional Networking & Real Connectivity, Transformation & Impact, and Affiliation & Pride. Our theme for 2018 was ‘Striving for Excellence’ and I believe that our vibrant and professional council did an outstanding job in delivering on its mandate.
More than 60% of our time is dedicated to education with tangible impact being made throughout the year. This was supported by several successful networking events to enhance meaningful connections between our members.
Promoting educational expertise, personal growth and transformation
Starting with our education initiatives, the IIG’s Class of 2018 marked the fifth year of a highly successful programme, sponsored by Old Mutual Insure and Sasria SOC Ltd, which provides young, dynamic future leaders with a sound insurance foundation. Impressively, the Class Of students managed to raise a staggering R500 000 through our various networking platforms, which resulted in three homes being built for underprivileged families. My proudest moment this year was definitely the unveiling of these homes. It was also a bittersweet year for the group as one of our young Class Of superstars, Reginald James, passed away unexpectedly. He was a vibrant personality which left a mark on the lives of his peers.
Staying with the pillar of Education & Personal Growth, the IIG’s Insurance Leadership Development Programme (ILDP), which was launched in partnership with Sasria in 2016, saw 20 students graduate. A special word of thanks to Sasria for committing to fund this programme for the next few years, ensuring that we continue to grow insurance leadership.
Our mentorship programme “Roots & Wings” was a great success and once again showcased even more young talent. Thank you to our mentors for their time and sponsors, Insure Group Managers and Sasria, who supported the initiative this year.
On 16 November, our education programmes were concluded with a celebration as we hosted our first ever insurance awards and graduation ceremony at GIBS, in collaboration with the IISA. A total of 54 insurance professionals received their certificates of completion and graduated after a year of exceptionally hard work.
Adding to our education programmes, we hosted several Insights sessions to full attendance where delegates were treated to international-calibre speakers at each one. A highlight was hosting the World Bank subsidiary MIGA in collaboration with the IISA and SAIA.
Held earlier in the year, our CEO Roundtable saw 35 insurance senior professionals engage in conversation with Boston Consulting Group CEO, Adam Ikdal on the future of insurance.
Our Broker Leadership forum, in collaboration with the FIA, was hosted by Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty. AGCS brought in international experts to talk to a select group of senior national brokers with the FIA CEO Lizelle van der Merwe providing her valuable thoughts on the future of the broker market.
We’ve been working hard behind the scenes and are proud to announce the introduction of a new education initiative for 2019. This programme is pitched at NQF level 5 for matriculants and will be funded by the IIG Bursary Fund and Sasria in equal proportions. After completing the one-year course these students will qualify with Licentiate status and be placed into various insurance companies or brokerages to build their careers. The course will be hosted at Wits and will accommodate 15 high school students.
Providing professional networking and real connectivity
At the beginning of the year, we took a step back to the 1920’s for our Inaugural Dinner which carried a “Great Gatsby” theme. Hosted at the Indaba Hotel, over 400 insurance professionals got to meet their new councilors.
Taking it to the fairways, we hosted four incredible golf days where more than 350 golfers came out to support the Presidents invitational in March, The Night Golf at Randpark Golf course in June, the Glasfit ladies non-golf in August as well as the Exclusive Golf Day at Steyn City in September. Thank you to those that supported these golf days and to our sponsors that made them possible.
In June, #YourIIG hosted our annual Youth Day event which was attended by 300 young insurance professionals who enjoyed a healthy dose of running, walking and even crawling. This was ended off with a Retro Rock ‘n Roll after party.
A special event on our calendar was our Women’s Day event which hosted 250 ladies who were treated to an unforgettable motivational speech by our IIG Deputy President, Carla Jordan.
Our much-anticipated Spinathon raised R480 000 this year with the funds being channeled to a number of charities as well as your education bursary fund.
The big event this year was the IIG international tour which was powered by Camargue Underwriting Managers and in association with Risk Africa. A group of 30 dynamic South African insurance professionals travelled to Zurich and Amsterdam to meet with a number of insurance sector companies, taking home some great learnings. IIG International will be visiting San Francisco and Washington in 2019, once again offering insurance professionals the global networking opportunity of a lifetime.
Finally, we launched our new website and new Instagram account to the 1 500 insurance professionals who attended our 77th Annual Dinner.
We have much to celebrate in 2018 and look forward to the new year.
